World Bank article

Who is the world bank?
The world bank was first established in 1994. Their
mission is to fight poverty and to help people 'help themselves'. It is made up of 184 countries. Its also linked to the UN (United Nations)

Why is it important to collect data from 73 countries?
73 countries, is around half the countries that are in the World bank. By using 73 countries instead of 1, you can make a 'estimate' of different consisting in poverty, so you can also get opinions from different people that live in different countries.

What is poverty?
Poverty is not having enough income to meet the basic human needs. The 3 main ones are food water and shelter. But is many cases clothing, sanitation, health care, and education also adds to the list. Poverty is also taking away rights and hope

What is the difference between poverty and extreme poverty?
The difference between them both is :Poverty is having unsatisfied needs. Extreme poverty is having unsatisfied material needs, and a degrating state of powerless.

What is a poverty trap?
A poverty trap is when your poverty traps you and you lose hope of escaping from a life of hard work. If its 3 generations of poverty, its a poverty trap as well

How does the world bank define poverty?
The world bank defines poverty as not having enough income to meet the basic needs for food, water, shelter, clothing, health, care, and education. If you use less than $1.25 per day, you are in poverty

How many people live under the poverty line in the world?
Around 1.4 million (now 3 billion) people live under the poverty line.

How are the numbers showing improvement in the situation over the last 20 years?
Over the last 20 years, its shows improvement in the situation because 20 years ago was every 4 in 10 people in poverty, as now fewer than 1 in 4 live in poverty

Can you suggest some things/Organizations that could be helping the situation and explain where there is an improvement?
Taxes, rich could give part of there tax to the poor, making things a little bit more fair. Also a lot of charity work, conservations, and educating people about what people stuck in poverty have to go through, so than they can help.

Write a short snapshot of when you witnessed poverty.
When I was in Vietnam 2 weeks ago, I saw a man who had disabled legs. He had torn flip-flops on his hands, and he was almost...dragging himself along the ground since his legs didn't work. I also saw a man with no eyes, no teeth, and a disabled arm and leg.

Global issues and living Ethically

Global issues really links to the SLR living ethically because we are considering how to help other people. In this class we are learning how to care for other people in other places. We are becoming more aware and responsible about our behaviour and the environment. The environment is not just plants and animals but the social environment as well and even the economy.Global issues are really huge but we% are learning to start small. I chose these words because I find that some of them are small and big.Such as poverty and aids . Those are big goals as Yes and no start smaller (having a voice).

A tragic story of what some people need to go through:

3rd world farmer reflection

First of all, you should know what '3rd world's are. 1st world is known as a developed country (such as the USA, Europe and Japan), a 2nd world country is a developing country (such as Russia and China), and a '3rd world' country is a country are places such as Africa and Asia.
In the game '3rd world farmer' you are put in a situation where you need to think carefully to live. You need to dodge obstacles such as droughts, diseases, and health, while helping your family run a farm, and often sending your children to school. The aim in the game is to get all these large developments : Communication, Infrastructure, School, Clinic, Representative, and Crop Insurance. When you get all of these, you win the game. Its as easy as that. So who cares if you have to spend 2,575 dollars on all of those things? It makes your life easier as a family, as well as cheaper in the end. Getting these things take a lot of practice to master, as it is quite hard to do, even though it does seem fairly easy. For the game, the things you should think about are . Here's the Website :http://www.3rdworldfarmer.com/
Things that help you during the game:

  • Well - Secure source of water

  • Saving up

  • Long term goals

  • Diversity of food- security

  • Financial security

  • Education = Marriage

  • Medicine

  • Having a voice

  • Insurance

  • Remarrying - both good and bad

  • Infrastructure - Schools and Hospitals

  • Technology -Plow Tractor
Things that did not help you:

  • Selling your kids

  • Selling things 'randomly'

  • Spending all your money at once

  • All of one Crop

  • Remarrying - good and bad, mainly bad

  • Marriage and having more Kids

  • Planting Drugs

  • Army Attacks

  • 'Showing off'

  • Allowing Dumping waste

I think the SLR which represents this game is probably 'Reason Critically' because you do need to really thing about what is the best strategy to solve a problem in the game. You need to think 'should I sell my children'? Because often if you just make up your mind in an instant, things can go terribly wrong.
